3 pts HANSA ROSTOCK + 0.5 Asian Handicap 0.8/1 ( Betfair) v MSV Duisburg Bundesliga 2

A clash between second and third - and one that has taken on added importance with fourth place Kaiserslautern closing up behind. Both teams have won 50% of their games; Duisburg are undefeated at home, Hansa have only lost once on their travels. Since returning from the winter break Hansa haven't quite looked as formidable as they have done in the first half of the season. Nevertheless, they tend to grind out results when travelling west. They've got draws on the road against both Karlsruhe and Kaiseslautern, and even before tonights match events have panned out in their favour off the field. The Duisburg camp have been hit by a virus, and at one stage doubts surrounded at least six first team players. While most have now been passed fit, there has to be question marks how they will perform, considering that it is the nature of this match which has probably got them the all clear. Enrico Kern, Hansa's top scorer this season with ten goals, returns tonight, and they should be supported on the Asians to come away with something.

2pts FC KOLN - 1 Asian Handicap 1.22/1 ( Betfair) v SC Paderborn Bundesliga 2

The Rhein Energie Stadion will be one of the locations used when Cologne hosts the 2010 Gay Olympics - and judging by the the manner in which the FC were hammered at Essen last weekend, one could be forgiven for thinking that many of this present team will be participating in the games themselves ! At the beginning of the season promotion back to Bundesliga 1 was seen as a formality. Hope of that has now disappeared and all the team has to play for is it's pride.Paderborn have won their last two on the road, but I have a feeling there will be an edge to the home side today. Christophe Daum has demanded ' fight and determination' from his team and Cologne are worth chancing at -1 on the Asians to bounce back from last week's disaster.

Koln 1 Paderborn 1 - 2pts

2 pts KARSRUHER SC 1.58/1 ( Betfair) v FC Augsburg Bundesliga 2

Bundesliga 1 football beckons for Karlsruhe, and they cam move a step nearer here with a victory against Bavarians, Augsburg. KSC have won five on the road so far. They slipped up after taking the lead against Duisburg in their last away match, and although todays opponents are solid middle table material, there is a notable class difference between them and KSC. They are fairly priced for outright victory.

Augsburg 3 KSC 1 - 2 pts

2pts BAYER LEVERKUSEN + 0.5 Asian Handicap 1.44/1 ( Betfair) v Schalke 04 Bundesliga 1

Leverkusen played clever in their midweek European tie, and it paid dividends for them. However, expect them to revert to type here in a fixture that traditionally has plenty of goals, not least that 7 - 4 scoreline in SO4's favour last season. Both teams are naturally attack minded, and the SO4 are playing with flair and arrogance at the moment - which is their style. They are however hit with an injury crisis here.Danish forward Lovenkrands will miss the match, along with promising defender Christian Pander, Gustavo Varela, Soren Larsen and Gerald Asamoah. Three other first team players are doubtful. They look vulnerable today and Leverkusen should be supported on the Asians to take advantage of the situation.

2pts FSV MAINZ -0 Asian handicap 0.97/1 ( Betfair) v FC Nürnberg Bundesliga 1

The visitors are a fine outfit and are deservedly challenging for a place in Europe next season. Their progress may be temporarily halted here though. Mainz, after struggling in the first half of the season and looking sure to go down, have a new found inspiration at the moment, winning four of their last five. They had in the past had a reputation of being a hard team to beat at home, and should be able to take something away from this encounter.Worth support with the DNB proviso.

2 pts EINTRACHT FRANKFURT + 0.5 Asian Handicap 1.28/1( Betfair) v Hamburg SV Bundesliga 1

Huub Stevens has suddenly given HSV a chance of escaping relegation. Their victory in Bremen was probably the shock result of the Bundesliga 1 season so far. They will be hoping to make it three in a row here - but they will not be underestimating their rivals who have only lost three of their eleven matches on the road. The odds makers have overeacted to HSV's last result, and while many will be hoping that they do eventually avoid the drop, the visitors at +0.5 on the Asians' appeal as the bet here.

1pt win CALVIC 25/1 ( Betfair) Eider Chase
1pt win TRUCKER'S TAVERN 14/1 ( Betfair) Eider Chase

Calvic finished last season with a progressive profile, looking one to shortlist for these valuable marathon events and appearing to be open to further improvement. He's disappointed in his two runs this winter but showed enough on his reappearance over hurdles at Haydock that he would shortly be winning when returned to fences. A couple of mistakes ruined his hopes last time, but his profile is not one of an animal who is regressive and he represents terrific value at current odds.

Trucker's Tavern has seen his best days and hasen't won for over two years. He does however retain a fair deal of ability and is slogging on well enough to suggest that he could pop up in one of these races. As is the usual in these sort of contests, only a couple will to within a few pound of their best, and the twelve year old has recently attained a level of consistency that puts him in with a sporting chance here.

3 pts win VfB STUTTGART 0.72/1 ( Betfair) v Hertha Berlin Bundesliga 1

Lots of negatives for Hertha here. Firstly, they have only won once on the road all season. That was against the vulnerable Borussia Dortmund. Stuttgart are the only top four team they have yet to play away to - they've lost on the road to Bayern, Werder, and the SO4. They are missing three key players tonight, not least influential midfielder Yildiray Bastürk.And ,of course, they are playing a team who are thriving, and absolutely on fire. Stuttgart are realistically eyeing the title at the moment and it will be a shock if they slip up tonight.

1 pt each way LONGSHANKS Grand National 33/1 ( with four firms)

Went in many notebooks as a future Aintree national type when a close second to Cassia Heights in the Topham three years ago. Has failed to make the line up in 2005 and 2006 but his Newbury win in November has put him in a mark where it is almost certain enough will come out the race to get him in this time. Again showed a liking for the unique course when running a fine race to be fourth in a much more competitive Topham in 2005, performing best out of those racing up with the fast pace. Don't be fooled in to thinking he won't stay extreme distances - he's best fresh( he won't run again before Aintree) and the below par performance in the Scottish National can be attributed to the race coming too soon. By Broadsword out of a Carlingford Castle mare, he'll stay the trip alright. His career over the last few years has been geared towards this and Bailey ( I can't believe he's lost the plot altogether !) will, fingers crossed, produce him in the form of his life on the day. Definitely catches the eye in the ante-post lists and must be included in any portfolio for the race.

3 pts ROT-WEISS ESSEN -0 Asian Handicap 1.25/1 ( Paddy Power) v Eintrach Braunschweig Bundesliga 2

A real fight for survival here. Bottom club Braunschweig must win to have any prospect of avoiding Regional football next winter. The visitors will have their tales up after thrashing Cologne 5-0 last weekend, scoring as many goals as they'd done in all of their previous twelve games. That victory puts them ahead of Wacker Burghausen on goal difference, and four points behind the 15th place club. Essen coach Köstner is aware of the critical situation facing both sides and has said that his team must go in playing to win from the very first minuite. They are unlikely to lose and should be supported with the safety net of DNB.

3pts OVER 2.5 GOALS 1.04/1 (Betfair) SpVgg Greuther Furth v SC Freiburg Bundesliga 2

Both teams are in peak form at the moment. Freiburg will be still be keeping up the hope that their present run of form can continue, and take them on to the tail of the promotion race. One bad result could put them too far out of contention. Their away record is 4 from 11, Furth's home record is five from ten. Freiburg have won their last three away without having conceding, though two of those were against the moderate pair Unterhaching and Koblenz, while the other was against a surprisingly muted Hansa Rostock. They will have trouble closing up shop here against the useful, attack minded home side. When these two teams met in September it was 3-3 and over 2.5 is the confident choice.

2 pts Under 2.5 Goals 0.92/1 (pinnacle) 0.89/1 ( Bet UK) Rot-Weiss Essen v FC Koln Bundesliga 2

Despite being on a winning run, Cologne are not impressing visually. The victories have been hard fought against poor opposition and they needed the help of an own goal and a fine save by Stefan Wessels to claim all three points against the lowly Braunschweig. Essen look doomed for relegation into the Regional Nord; they would dearly love something from this match and Cologne coach Daum is aware that this will be no ' give me' for his side. Cologne are much the stronger on paper and should really win this, but the most sensible option is to support under 2.5. Cologne are finding goals hard to come by, Essen have only scored five in their last twelve matches.

2 pts KARSRUHE - 1.5 Asian Handicap 1.1/1 ( Betfair) v Eintracht Braunschweig Bundesliga 2

Top versus botton and Braunschweig will feel the wrath of Karlsruhe here after the top side's defeat at Duisburg on Monday night. The gap between these two teams is that between Bundesliga 1 and the regional divisions. They won this fixture 7-0 last season and another comfortable victory is expected. Worth support to overcome a - 1.5 on the Asians.

2pts VfL BOCHUM + 0.5 Asian Handicap 3/4 ( Bet 365 UK ) v DSC Arminia Bielefeld Bundesliga 1

Both teams are deeply involved in the fascinating relegation struggle at the bottom of Bundesliga 1 - only five points separate 10th place Wolfsburg from bottom team Monchengladbach. Bielefeld regularly play between the 1st and 2nd divisions, and their best Bunsdeliga finish has been an 8th place in both 82/83 and 83/84 - though they have that popular ' Viva DSC ' song on the widely listened to CD ' LIEDER AUS DER BUNDESLIGA' ! They entertain Bochum here whom they are three points and five places ahead of in the table. Needless to say this will be closely fought and Bochum, having managed to frustrate the likes of Bayern Munich, Nurnberg, Hamburg, Dortmund, Hannover and Hertha Berlin on the road this season, must be backed at + 0.5 on the Asians.

1 pt win THE OUTLIER 8/1( Betfair) Red Square Vodka Chase
1 pt win L' AVENTURE 19/1 ( Betfair) Red Square Vodka Chase

A progressive Roselier, and in the form of his life, The Outlier has not been unreasonably treated by the 8lb rise for his course win last time. Of course it's possible to go through that race with a fine tooth combe and justify why everything else ran below form - but that's the nature of these races, and you'll probably find looking back at today's race that only a couple will run to their best. The extra distance should not pose any problems and there seems to be a rapport building up between the horse and his 3lb claiming rider.

L'Aventure has a completely opposite profile. Unreliable and out of form, but giving the impression that she retains most of her old ability, she has dropped down to her lowest handicap mark for ages. While this is of little help if she's not on a going day, the mare is worth risking at the price in the hope that she'll put up an improved show.

1 pt win MONOLITH 8/1 (Betfair) Pertemps handicap Hurdle

Some interesting contenders here. Hautclan has a valuable prize in him somewhere and could be one to bear in mind for Cheltenham. In the circumstances it's probably worth siding with a couple of in form contenders. Abragante has been switching back and forth between hurdles and fences, and there is further improvement from him in both spheres. Difficult to see him not being involved at ther business end here. Monolith ran an eyecatching race in this last year when his rider was suspended for making insufficient effort. He was returning from a similar few month break then - but coming here on the back of a victory he will be up for this today, and like Abragante, it will be surprising if he's not involved.

3pts OVER 2.5 Goals 0.73/1 ( Betfair) Bayer Leverkusen v Hannover 96 Bundesliga 1

At first instance this may not seem particularly outstanding in terms of value. Nevertheless, this is were the stats give an accurate impression of these teams. Hannover are playing visually pleasing, passing, attacking football. They score freely but are prone to hiccups at the back. Leverkusen build up attacks very quickly. Free scoring, but careless in defence. On the last ten occasions that these clubs have met in Bundesliga 1 fixtures, an incredible eight have been over 2.5 ! Needless to say anymore.

2 pts OVER 2.5 GOALS 0.98/1 ( Betfair) Eintracht Frankfurt v VfB Stuttgart Bundesliga 1

The visitors are absolutely flying at the moment. The team has the top Bundesliga 1 scorer this season, Mario Gomez, who played for the Geman national side last week. The home side have found themselves struggling to stay in the top division. They are no pushovers though, and the odds for the visitors are a bit too short too get involved bearing in mind that they have been held to a draw away by lowly Mainz and Cottbus. They were 0-0's - but Frankfurt are unlikely to play so negatively tonight. Stuttgart are 7 from 11 overs in their Bundesliga 1 away games this term, and a high scoring game is predicted.

2 pts ERZGEBIRGE AUE HT/FT 1.62/1 ( Paddy Power) v SV Wacker Burghausen Bundesliga 2

Aue had some key players missing when beaten away by the useful Greuther Furth last weekend. Latest reports from the club website indicate that they will still be missing for Friday's clash against the pretty useless Burghausen. The visitors are a team who will get rolled over very easily by any half-decent Bundesliga 2 side and Paddy Power's quote for the HT/FT double is a stand out.

2 pts FC KAISERSLAUTERN 1.25/1 ( 3 Firms) v TuS Koblenz Bundesliga 2

Fourth place FCK travel to Koblenz with great prospects of taking all three points. Along with Duisburg, they have drawn more matches than any other team in Bundesliga 2. However, three of their four away victories have been against bottom half teams , Paderborn, Braunschweig and Offenbach, ( the other victory coming against mid-table 1860 Munich), and they are fairly priced to make their class difference tell in Friday's encounter against their run of the mill rivals.

3 pts KARLSRUHER SC 0 and + 0.5 Asian Handicap Evens ( Betfair) v MSV Duisburg Bundesliga 2

Karlsruher deservedly sit at the top of Bundesliga 2 and travel up to fourth placed Duisburg here. Both sides have just one defeat each to their name (Karlsruher at home to Aue, Duisburg away at Rostock), with KSC having scored an incredible 46 goals in their 20 matches, with the versatile midfielder/attacker Italian Giovanni Federicco, and Albanian Edmond Kapllani scoring 23 of these goals between then. They are a formidable side and are able to play clever and soak up pressure and strike on the counter in these big away games. I don't expect them to be beaten tonight and think the most sensible option is the 0 and + 0.5 on the Asians.

3 pts OVER 2.5 GOALS 1.04/1 ( Betfair) SC Freiburg v TSV 1860 Munich Bundesliga 2

1860 could have scored ten against Burghausen in their live tv encounter on Monday night. The final scoreline did not flatter them. They won all the challenges in the midfield, shredded their opponents defence on the attack, and defended with confidence when their opponents counter attacked. Of course, Freiburg are a couple of levels above Burghausen and like 1860, they still have an outside chance of reaching a promotion place. Both teams need a string of victories for this to happen and for this reason I doubt any of the sides will be happy with a single point and expect an all out attacking game with plenty of goals.

2pts OVER 2.5 GOALS 47/50 ( Pinnacle), 93/100( 10 Bet Uk) Bayern Munich v DSC Arminia Bielefeld Bundesliga 1

The bottom of Bundesliga 1 is tightly packed with as many as nine teams still not altogether safe from relegation. Needless to say every point will count and Bielefeld would no doubt be happy coming away from Bavaria with a point. However, an attempt to pack their own half with their own players is unlikely to work. Bayern are going through a mini crisis, and don't have a realistic chance of retaining their title with the SO4 now flying well ahead of them. Their sights will be now be set on automatic European qualification. They'll no doubt score one or two here, but their disorganised defence will be vulnerable when Bielefeld attack.

3 pts ALEMANIA AACHEN 1.12/1 + 0.5 Asian Handicap ( Betfair) v Borussia Monchengladbach Bundesliga 1

Both team are battling relegation.Newly promoted Aachen started the season well but have been in decline ever since. There was discord in the first part of the season when their star player Jan Schlaudraff made it clear that he would be considering offers from some of the bigger clubs during the winter pause. Coach Michael Frontzeck evidently considered that he was getting to big for his boots and duly dropped him from the side. A few months on, Schlaudraff is still with the club and will be making the journey to Monchengladbach after missing the last game with a virus. The carefree and careless Aachen are dreadful defensively, but are capable of producing a turn up ( they have won away at Hannover, Mainz and Wolfsburg this season) and are overpriced at 9/2 against their more illustrious, but similarly struggling rivals. However, playing safe I'll take them at 1.12/1 with a 0.5 advantage on the Asians'.

1 pt Win VICTRAM 18.5/1 (Betfair) Totesport Hurdle

An in and out performer, but one who can perform in big competitive fields as demonstrated by his Imperial Cup success. He'll not be inconvenienced by the ground, has a current handicap mark that fairly reflects his progression, and connections seem to be very bullish about his chances here. Is without doubt the value call of the race.

Papini has never won in such competitive company as this. The race he won at Sandown last time was weakly contested for the prize money on offer. However, in the likely conditions that will face the field today, you are halfway there if you have proven form on a similar terrain, and this animal appears to relish testing going. Furthermore, his prominent racing style could be an added bonus, for if they go a sensible pace he may take some pegging back from the front.

2 pts UNDER 2.5 GOALS 4/5 ( Paddy Power) Eintracht Braunschweig v FC Koln Bundesliga 2

DSF showed the highlights of Cologne's home match against Carl Zeiss Jena and anyone with a liking for the club can only have been disappointed, despite the victory. In view of the opposition, Cologne created only a few real chances, and it was only a penalty decision that saved them from embarrassment. The Helmes saga still continues. A large banner looked out across the stadium with the words ( roughly translated) ' Helmes, piss off and never come back you two faced pig '. The player himself was a spectator at the match, and Daum was questioned about the situation in the post match press conference. Am confident that Friday's match will be a low scoring affair and the under 2.5 is the most sensible option.

The home side are in fine heart at present following a poor spell in the first half of the season, and can complete the double over their rivals following a 2-1 victory at the Volkswagen stadium in August. They performed with great credit in their defeat away at Bremen and posed serious problems for the home side during the first half, and in the early stages of the second. The team includes the emerging star Jan Rosenthal, their last two performances' have seen them destroy their opponents, and they represent terrific value against rivals who are not the safe, reliable mid-div side of a few seasons back.

3 pts TSV 1860 MUNICH ( 0.72/1 Betfair) v Wacker Burghausen Bundesliga 2

These maximum 3 pt selections are letting me down at the moment! Nevertheless, anyone who watched the live TV encounter between these two sides earlier in the season can only contemplate one result. Despite being at home, it took Burghausen as long as 35 minuites to make any sort of controlled, meaningful move inside their opponents territory. They are of course better than that and have managed to win away at Wolfsburg since. Furthermore, they have made a go of this fixture in the past. But in reality, they are there for the taking tonight. TSV have a 6 from 9 success race at home this season - their 4-0 beating of Aue before the winter pause showing what they are capable of. They are overpriced on Betfair at the moment ( in fact they've traded as high as 0.78/1 earlier) and should win this decisively.

Freiburg still have an outside chance of getting into promotion contention but make the journey to Munich knowing they must keep the current momentum going. They have won their last three and face a team who can only boast a 2 from 10 record at home in Bundesliga matches this season. Cologne gained a much needed victory down in Bavaria last weekend and it will be a major disappointment for the club if they are unable to despatch of their eastern rivals today. It was announced during the week that their still sidelined star Patrick Helmes will remain at the club for the whole duration of the 2007/08 season, before moving over the water to Leverkusen. The long term injured apart, Daum has a fully fit squad to choose from today. Jena have yet to win on the road this season and are finding life hard at the moment, and the home side should be supported on the Asians, with the -1 & -1.5 the safest option bearing in mind that shaky defence.

Bremen have been successful in this fixture on four out the last five occasions and are confidently expected to take this despite not having Frings available. The S04 are exciting to watch when things unfold their way but do have a tendency to become frustrated easily and spit out the dummy when things do not pan out. Yes, they are on a fine run at the moment, but will more than meet their match today and the home side are worth the maximum stake to win this.

Aachen have been in freefall down the table and have a woeful defensive record. There has been talk within the club during the week about the prospect of them playing a more defensive game. But they are a natural risk taking, attacking side and it is difficult to imagine them changing overnight. Hannover 96 performed with great credit away at Bremen despite the scoreline, and have since hammered Hertha Berlin. They have four victories on the road this season and should be backed to take maximum points here.

These sort of animals win in their turn; the yard managing to bag a valuable prize with another hair pulling out sort in Ladalko recently.

Hasty Prince jumped better than he had in the past on his return to fences earlier in the season, giving renewed hope that there could be a future for him in valuable handicap company in this sphere. 1pt win ROYAL'S DARLING 5/1( genearlly available) Sandown Handicap Hurdle
1pt win REFINEMENT 24/1 ( Betfair) Sandown Handicap Hurdle

Royal's Darling has two bits of eyecatching form behind Detroit City as a juvenile. In fact, he carried a big reputation with him and one gets the impression that he never achieved what was expected. The fact that he has not been involved in an early switch to the larger obstacles should be taken as a hint. He is a likeable sort, has plenty of further improvement left, and hails from a bang in form yard.

Refinement is now on a career high mark but is capable of further justifying connections decision to keep her in training. A hardy sort who takes her racing well, she can carry these weights despite her small stature, and these large field handicaps suit her style of running. She disappointed the last time she raced without blinkers, but did not require them earlier in her career. It's futile trying to second guess why they have been left off - the handicapper is hardly likely to relent much in the face of one poor run - and all in all there are more positives than negatives ( though the fact that she is presently so easy to back on the exchanges is a concern) which make her worth small support at the price.

2 pts UNDER 2.5 GOALS ( Evens, Betfair) Nürnberg v Bayern Munich Bundesliga 1

Bayern have been very indifferent lately and truth is they may have already blew their title chance in their last couple of games. Their fate is now out of their hands and they are relying on Bremen and Schalke both slipping up. Bayern have a very high overs record in their away matches this season, but tonight will probably be a low scoring affair. Nürnberg play fine team football and are well capable of muting the big guns. Their 0-0's away to Bayern and home to Schalke are examples of this, and I expect them to prove frustrating opponents for Bayern tonight.
